Chapter 9 — The Siege of Frosthold

The war horns sounded before sunrise.

Their mournful cry rolled across the frozen mountains, waking every wolf in Frosthold.

Seren stood on the eastern battlements, the silver pendant warm against her chest.

Below, the forest stretched like a sea of black pines, its branches bending beneath fresh snow.

"They're closer," she whispered.

Kael joined her, fastening the clasp of his cloak against the bitter wind.

"You can feel them."

It wasn't a question.

Seren nodded.

"It's like... a heartbeat beneath the earth."

She hated how natural those words felt.

Captain Eirik climbed the stairs two at a time and dropped to one knee.

"Alpha."

Kael turned.

"Report."

"The scouts confirm movement in the forest."

"How many?"

"Too many to count."

Eirik hesitated.

"They're not marching."

"What do you mean?"

"They're... waiting."

By midday, every entrance to Frosthold had been fortified.

Archers lined the walls. Blacksmiths worked without rest, repairing armor and sharpening blades. Healers prepared the great hall to receive the wounded.

Despite the frantic activity, an uneasy calm settled over the castle.

It felt less like the beginning of a battle...

...and more like the pause before an avalanche.

Lady Isolde found Seren in the archives.

The old woman carried a bundle wrapped in faded blue cloth.

"I've been looking for this since the prophecy awakened."

She unfolded the cloth carefully.

Inside lay a hand-drawn map.

Unlike any Seren had ever seen.

The Twelve Kingdoms were drawn in silver ink, but beneath them ran a second network of winding paths, marked with crescent symbols.

"What are they?" Seren asked.

"The Moon Paths."

Lady Isolde traced one delicate line.

"They were created by the First Moon to unite the kingdoms before roads existed."

"I've never heard of them."

"No one has for centuries."

She looked at Seren with quiet certainty.

"They can only be opened by one of her blood."

Seren's fingers tightened around the pendant.

"You think that's me."

"I think the Moon has been trying to tell us."

That evening, snow began to fall harder than ever before.

Kael found Seren alone in the castle greenhouse, where moon lilies bloomed beneath enchanted glass.

For a while, they simply walked among the flowers.

Finally Kael broke the silence.

"When I was a boy, my mother brought me here whenever I doubted myself."

Seren smiled softly.

"What did she say?"

"That a true Alpha isn't the one who never fears."

He looked at her.

"It's the one who keeps walking despite it."

She reached for one of the lilies, brushing its white petals with her fingertips.

"I'm afraid."

"So am I."

The admission surprised them both.

Kael laughed quietly.

"I've spent years pretending I had every answer."

"And now?"

"Now I have questions no one can answer."

He stopped walking.

"So I'll ask the only person who might."

Seren met his eyes.

"Do you trust yourself?"

She thought carefully before answering.

"I trust my heart."

"And the power?"

"No."

The honesty made him smile.

"Good."

She frowned.

"Good?"

"Power without fear is dangerous."

He stepped closer, close enough that she could see tiny snowflakes melting in his dark hair.

"But fear without courage is worse."

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Seren reached up and straightened the clasp of his cloak where it had come loose.

Her fingers brushed his collar.

Kael gently covered her hand with his.

"I don't know where this road ends."

"Neither do I."

"But..."

His voice softened.

"...I'm glad you're walking it with me."

A warm blush spread across Seren's cheeks.

Instead of answering, she rested her forehead lightly against his.

The moment was quiet.

Tender.

No prophecy.

No politics.

Just two people choosing to face the unknown together.

The peace lasted only seconds.

The castle shook violently.

A thunderous boom echoed through Frosthold.

Then another.

Captain Eirik burst into the greenhouse.

"Alpha!"

Kael turned instantly.

"The eastern gate has been breached!"

"Impossible."

"There was no army."

Eirik's face had gone pale.

"The gates..."

He struggled to find the words.

"They opened by themselves."

A freezing wind rushed through the broken doorway.

Every moon lily in the greenhouse turned toward the east at once.

Their white petals glowed silver.

Seren's pendant pulsed against her heart.

Then, carried on the wind, came a voice she recognized from her visions.

"Come home... Daughter of the First Moon."

Kael drew his sword in a single smooth motion and stepped in front of Seren.

Beyond the castle walls, a lone figure in a black cloak stood on the snow-covered bridge leading to Frosthold.

The stranger did not advance.

Did not speak.

Instead, they slowly removed their hood.

Seren's breath caught.

The woman staring back at her had the same silver eyes.

The same dark hair.

The same face.

It was as though Seren were looking into a mirror.

The stranger smiled sadly.

"You've finally found the pendant," she said.

"I've waited a very long time for you."
