Chapter 3 — The Frost Between Us

The first light of dawn spilled across Frosthold like liquid silver, turning the endless snowfields into mirrors beneath the pale northern sky.

Seren had never imagined silence could be so loud.

The castle breathed around her—the distant clang of blacksmiths beginning their work, servants moving through long stone corridors, wolves changing shifts atop the icy walls.

Everything felt alive, yet she had never felt more alone.

She stood beside the frost-covered window of her chamber, wrapping a wool cloak around her shoulders. Beyond the glass, the banners of House Draven snapped proudly in the winter wind.

This was home now.

Or at least...

It was where fate had decided she belonged.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"My Lady?"

The young maid from the previous evening entered carrying a silver tray laden with warm bread, berries preserved in honey, and steaming cedar tea.

"My name is Elin," the girl said with a shy smile. "The Alpha requested that I attend to you personally."

Seren blinked.

"Kael requested it?"

Elin nodded.

"He said the northern cold is harsh for southern wolves."

An odd warmth settled in Seren's chest.

It wasn't affection.

It wasn't love.

But it was consideration.

And somehow...

That almost hurt more.

The training grounds buzzed with activity.

Dozens of warriors shifted between wolf and human form with practiced ease, sparring beneath drifting snow.

Seren had wandered there simply to escape the suffocating quiet of the castle.

Instead, she found herself watching Kael.

He moved like winter itself.

Every strike was precise.

Every dodge effortless.

Even surrounded by his strongest warriors, he looked untouchable.

"Again."

His voice carried across the yard.

A massive gray wolf lunged.

Kael sidestepped before grabbing the warrior's arm and throwing him onto the snow with startling ease.

"No hesitation," he instructed calmly. "Your enemy won't give you a second chance."

The warriors immediately obeyed.

Respect surrounded him naturally.

Not because they feared him.

Because they trusted him.

Seren couldn't stop watching.

Perhaps sensing her gaze, Kael turned.

Their eyes met across the courtyard.

For one suspended heartbeat...

Everything else disappeared.

The mate bond stirred.

Not violently.

Just enough for warmth to bloom beneath Seren's skin.

Kael felt it too.

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

Then he looked away.

The moment shattered.

"You shouldn't be here."

The voice came softly from behind.

Seren turned to find Lyra wrapped in elegant white furs, her golden hair braided with tiny snowflowers.

Her smile was gentle.

Too gentle.

"The warriors become distracted," Lyra continued. "Especially the Alpha."

Seren studied her carefully.

"I wasn't aware my presence carried such influence."

Lyra laughed.

"Oh, perhaps not intentionally."

She stepped beside Seren, watching Kael across the field.

"I've known him since we were children."

There was unmistakable pride in her voice.

"I stitched his wounds after every reckless fight."

Another pause.

"I stayed awake through nights when nightmares stole his sleep."

Seren remained silent.

"I know what tea he drinks before battles."

"What songs his mother used to sing."

"What expression means he's hiding pain."

Lyra finally looked directly at Seren.

"The Moon may have chosen you."

Her smile never faltered.

"But there are some places fate cannot force its way into."

Before Seren could answer—

A cry echoed across the yard.

One of the younger warriors had fallen awkwardly during training.

His shoulder bent at an unnatural angle.

Lyra immediately rushed forward.

"He needs me."

She didn't glance back.

Within moments, warriors surrounded the healer.

Seren watched quietly.

Every movement Lyra made was graceful.

Confident.

Practiced.

The court adored her.

Seren understood why.

But something about the conversation lingered like frost beneath her skin.

Those hadn't been the words of a woman who had accepted fate.

They were the warning of someone preparing for war.

Later that afternoon, Lady Isolde, Kael's elderly aunt and keeper of Frosthold's archives, requested Seren's company.

The library occupied an entire tower.

Shelves carved from ancient pine stretched toward vaulted ceilings painted with silver constellations.

Thousands of books rested beside weathered scrolls older than any kingdom.

"You enjoy reading."

It wasn't a question.

Seren smiled faintly.

"My mother always said books reveal truths people hide."

Lady Isolde chuckled.

"A wise woman."

She led Seren deeper into the library.

"I knew Kael's mother."

The older wolf's expression softened.

"Astra often spent hours in this very room."

Seren paused.

"The late Luna?"

Isolde nodded.

"She believed knowledge could save kingdoms."

Her fingers brushed an ancient leather-bound volume.

"And she believed the Moon never makes mistakes."

Seren lowered her gaze.

"I wish I possessed that certainty."

"You think Kael should have been chosen for Lyra."

"I think..." Seren answered honestly, "they already loved each other."

Lady Isolde was quiet for several moments.

Then she removed a weathered book from the highest shelf.

Its cover bore an unfamiliar silver crescent surrounded by twelve stars.

"The First Moon."

Seren frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

"Few have."

Lady Isolde opened the brittle pages with extraordinary care.

Inside were paintings unlike any Seren had ever seen.

A woman cloaked in moonlight.

White wolves kneeling before her.

Silver eyes glowing brighter than the stars themselves.

"The first wolves were not born under our moon."

Seren looked up.

"What?"

"They walked beside Her."

Lady Isolde's voice became almost reverent.

"Long before kingdoms existed."

A strange sensation prickled across Seren's skin.

Something...

Familiar.

As if she'd heard these words before.

Not with her ears.

But somewhere much deeper.

The elderly woman stopped on a page nearly destroyed by time.

Only one sentence remained legible.

When darkness consumes the Twelve, the Daughter of the First Moon shall awaken beneath winter's sky.

Seren stared at the words.

Her fingertips tingled.

Without thinking...

She reached toward the page.

The moment her fingers brushed the faded ink—

Silver light erupted from the book.

The room shook violently.

Books crashed from shelves.

Windows rattled.

Lady Isolde stumbled backward in shock.

"What have you done?"

But Seren couldn't answer.

The glowing words were changing.

Reforming.

As if responding only to her.

A second sentence slowly appeared.

One that had been hidden for centuries.

Lady Isolde gasped.

"No..."

Seren read the words aloud, barely above a whisper.

"She will bear the mark forgotten by kings... and the wolf chosen by the First Moon shall either unite the Twelve Kingdoms... or destroy them all."

Before either woman could recover—

The library doors burst open.

Kael strode inside, sword already drawn.

His sharp blue eyes swept across the room before settling on Seren...

And on the ancient book blazing with impossible silver light in her hands.

The color drained from his face.

"...That's impossible."

Outside, somewhere beyond Frosthold's towering walls...

A lone black wolf stood upon a frozen cliff.

Its crimson eyes burned beneath the falling snow.

It had waited centuries for this moment.

At last...

The Daughter of the First Moon had awakened.

End of Chapter.
